Desiree + Josh’s Intimate Oregon Coast Wedding at Capella by the Sea
Desiree and Josh’s wedding in Brookings, Oregon was small by design and full of the people who mattered most. Their day began at a shared Airbnb, moved into the trees for an intimate ceremony at Capella by the Sea, and ended along the coast at Harris Beach State Park with a first dance on the sand and one perfectly timed break in the fog.
Oregon Wedding Co. provided both photography and videography for their wedding, which gave us the chance to tell the full story from two perspectives. The photographs preserved the fleeting expressions and quiet details, while the film captured the movement, voices, laughter, music, and atmosphere that made the day feel distinctly theirs.
Getting Ready Together in Brookings
The morning started at a large Airbnb where Desiree, Josh, and many of their favorite people were all staying and getting ready. For a small wedding, this is one of our favorite ways to begin the day. Rather than splitting everyone between several hotels or locations, family and friends can wander between rooms, help each other get ready, share a drink, fix a stubborn boutonniere, or simply hang out before everything officially begins.
Josh went with a green jacket that looked especially good surrounded by the deep greens and earth tones of the Southern Oregon Coast. Desiree chose a beautifully classic wedding dress, the kind of timeless look that does not need much help from trends or elaborate styling. As photographers and videographers, we loved how different their looks were while still feeling completely right together.
They also made a conscious decision: they skipped the first look. Josh was going to see Desiree for the first time when she walked down the aisle.

Saving the First Look for the Ceremony
There are plenty of practical reasons to have a first look before a wedding ceremony, but there is something undeniably special about saving that moment for the aisle. Desiree and Josh wanted the anticipation, so we worked around it. That decision changed the feeling of the morning in a good way. There was a little extra suspense as everyone prepared to leave for the ceremony, knowing that one of the biggest moments of the day was still waiting. From a wedding videography perspective, moments like these are exactly why we try not to over-direct a wedding day. Josh’s reaction did not need to be recreated, prompted, or choreographed. We simply needed to be in the right place when it happened. The same is true for photography. Some of the best wedding images happen in the half-second after someone forgets a camera is even there.
An Intimate Ceremony
The ceremony took place at Capella by the Sea in Brookings, Oregon, a small chapel surrounded by trees and one of the more distinctive locations for an intimate wedding on the Southern Oregon Coast. It feels tucked away without being isolated, and its scale makes it particularly well suited for elopements and weddings with smaller guest lists.
Desiree and Josh were surrounded by the people they most wanted beside them. That intimacy made the ceremony feel especially personal. You could see every reaction, hear every laugh, and watch family members experience the ceremony from only a few feet away.
Their ceremony was officiated by Ashley, Desiree’s best friend, which added another layer of personality to the day. There is something different about hearing your story told by someone who actually knows it. A friend knows the history behind the relationship, the personalities involved, and often the tiny details that would never make their way into a ceremony performed by someone meeting the couple for the first time.
Those personal words are also incredibly valuable in a wedding film. Good wedding videography is not simply a collection of pretty slow-motion footage. The voices from a wedding day are often what give a film its soul.
And how did they decide who would say their vows first? Why rock-paper-scissors, of course!
From Capella by the Sea to Harris Beach
After the ceremony, everyone made their way to Harris Beach State Park. This is one of the things we love most about photographing and filming weddings in Brookings: a couple can go from a wooded ceremony surrounded by towering trees to an open stretch of dramatic Oregon coastline without turning the wedding day into an all-day road trip.
Harris Beach is quintessential Southern Oregon Coast. Sea stacks rise from the water, waves roll into wide stretches of sand, and the landscape can completely change depending on the weather. On this particular afternoon, fog had settled over the beach and softened everything around it.
For some couples, fog on the wedding day might sound like something to worry about. For an Oregon wedding photographer or videographer, it can be fantastic. Coastal fog gives images a completely different mood, muting the background and creating beautiful separation around the couple. Rather than fighting the conditions, we leaned into them.
Besides, Oregon had another idea waiting for us.
A First Dance on the Beach
With their friends and family gathered nearby and the Pacific stretching out behind them, Desiree and Josh shared their first dance on the sand to “Love Me Tonight.”
It was one of those moments that summed up the entire wedding. There was no need for an elaborate setup. The location already provided everything. Their guests were there, the ocean was behind them, and they had a song that belonged to the moment.
That freedom is one of the best parts of planning a small Oregon Coast wedding or elopement. When you are not trying to coordinate a room full of hundreds of people, the landscape can become part of the celebration. A beach can be the dance floor. A forest can be the ceremony space. You can move when the light changes or take an extra twenty minutes for photos without derailing an enormous production.
Wedding Photography and Videography That Work Together

When photo and video are working as one creative team, there is less repetition, less competing direction, and a much smoother flow throughout portraits.
It also allows the final gallery and film to feel connected. The photography may freeze the instant Desiree and Josh laugh together on the beach, while the film captures what happened three seconds before and three seconds afterward. One medium preserves an expression; the other preserves the movement, voice, and atmosphere surrounding it.
Neither replaces the other. They tell the same story differently.
For couples planning an Oregon Coast elopement, where changing weather and light can create short windows of opportunity, that coordination can be especially valuable. When the fog lifted at Harris Beach, we did not need to stop and negotiate whose turn it was. We simply started creating.
